Purpose of Establishment

The “Biorefinery Interdisciplinary Research Center” was established to conduct interdisciplinary joint research that develops highly functional bio-nanomaterials from lignocellulosic biomass resources. The center has set the vision of making a leap forward as the world's leading research center.

Background and Necessity of Establishment

  • In response to demands in solving global environmental issues such as global warming and climate change, research on the development of highly functional new materials by applying advanced bio-nanotechnology to renewable and carbon-neutral lignocellulosic biomass resources is attracting attention.

  • The international community recognizes Korea as successful in the forest sector because approximately 64% of the total land area is composed of forests and the total forest biomass in Korea exceeded 950 million cubic meters as of 2016.

  • Gangwon Province occupies the largest area of forest among provinces in Korea including 53% of the entire national forest. Forest biomass available for commercial deforestation in Gangwon Province is the highest in the nation at about 100,000 tons. The amount of biomass that can be continuously produced increases every year, so the needs for new applications is growing.

  • The biorefinery interdisciplinary research center aims to promote the development of highly efficient methods of utilizing biomass resources and applications of biomass as highly functional new material by integrating professional researchers of related fields in Kangwon National University and conducting interdisciplinary joint research projects.
